If you are looking to immigrate into the United States, then you are aware that there are many things that you must do in order to enter the country legally. One of the things you must do is have an immigration medical exam. Keep reading to learn the purpose of these exams.
Purpose of an Immigration Medical Exam
Those who are entering into the country need a medical exam to determine whether or not they have any communicable diseases. It is also required for those entering the country to provide proof of vaccinations. Both of these things are used by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services to see if the individual meets the health standards for entering the country. If the person has a contagious disease, is not able to prove they have the necessary vaccinations, is diagnosed with a physical or mental disorder with harmful behavior or has an addiction, then that person may be deemed inadmissible. While this exam is necessary in order to enter into the country, it is not an extensive exam. Rather, it is designed to search for particular medical issues that pertain to the U.S. immigration law. These examinations are not to diagnose other ailments that the individual may be experiencing as the U.S. government only requires physicians to check for certain illnesses and diseases. It is not a substitute for an annual check-up.
When to Schedule an Immigration Medical Exam
After you have applied for a visa, the National Visa Center will alert you as to when you need to schedule your examination. If you have already received the required vaccinations be sure to bring medical records showing that, if you haven’t received the vaccinations, you can do so at the time of your appointment. If you are applying for a green card, you may choose to first submit your application and then be examined at a later time. If you decide to do this, make sure to schedule your appointment soon after applying. Then be sure to take your results to the green card interview.
