As autumn approaches, so does the season for colds and the flu. When children return to school, it is common for sickness to spread. The same is true in the workplace. It can be difficult, at times, to determine whether symptoms are signifying a cold or influenza as they can be similar. A cold typically involves a runny nose, headache, congestion, coughing and sneezing. Influenza involves a fever, headache, dry cough, raspy breathing and aches and pains. Home remedies are used for both sicknesses, and they can be helpful in the healing process. However, there can be a time when home remedies are not enough. Keep reading to find out when you need to see a doctor.
Difficulty Breathing
If you are having trouble breathing or have chest tightness, you should schedule an appointment with your doctor. Having a cold or the flu should not cause serious breathing issues or chest pain. Constant trouble breathing or chest pain can mean that something more serious is going on, especially if you suffer from asthma or heart disease. It could also mean that you have developed pneumonia. If you find that you are unable to breathe or have constant, severe chest pain go to the emergency room.
Inability to Keep Anything Down
When you aren’t feeling well, it is wise to eat lighter foods or drink only liquids. However, if you are unable to keep even liquids down, you may need to go to the doctor. Or, if serious enough, you may need to go to the hospital to be fed intravenously. Your body needs liquids in order to properly function, especially when you are unwell.
On-Going Cough
If you find that you have had a consistent cough, it may be due to mucus that is dripping from your nose into your throat. However, it could also be related to other ailments, such as asthma or a gastroesophageal reflux disease. Whatever the reason behind the cough, it is suggested that you speak to your doctor about what you can do to relieve it.
